Do you have what it takes to protect and improve our unique environment in Wessex from South Gloucestershire to the Jurassic Coast of Dorset, Wiltshire across Somerset to Exmoor?
We are looking for motivated people who are passionate about the environment and want to make a difference. Being an Environment Officer, you will be at the front line helping us to deliver Defra’s 25 Year Strategy for the Environment. You will deal with everything from routine compliance checks to tackling illegal waste activity. You will be working directly to help to create a cleaner, safer, healthier environment for wildlife and people.
Our work involves:
• Ensuring compliance with permit conditions.
• Influencing operators to be the best they can.
• Engaging with local communities and operators explaining our role and understand their concerns.
• Conducting inspections and taking action if the environment is at risk.
• Investigating offences, taking enforcement action where appropriate.
• Dealing with all environmental incidents - illegal waste activity, flooding and pollution of inland and coastal waters.
• Working with our Enforcement and Legal teams to bring cases to court, giving evidence as necessary.
• Attending out of hours emergencies as part of a standby rota.
Our EPR Waste team responds to incidents of all kinds across Wessex Area. We regulate permitted sites within a defined geographic patch and investigate illegal waste activity. We work with partners and customers to influence behaviour and encourage good practice. We complete compliance checks at regulated sites, gather intelligence and investigate illegal activity. Our work involves taking enforcement action when necessary and working out of hours to attend environmental incidents.
Ideally you will have some experience in a regulatory, enforcement or customer-focused role. Perhaps you’ve inspected or evaluated sites, handled or investigated complaints or been in a role in which you’ve had to have difficult conversations with people. You may already be in a regulatory role, or have worked in a regulated industry. Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment and be willing to enforce environmental regulations, even if this means sometimes dealing with confrontational situations. You must be able to drive.
Whilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, it’s less important to us than your ability to demonstrate key transferable skills and personal qualities such as great communication, taking decisions and being able to influence others.
We are not seeking specific qualifications for these roles. It’s more important to us that you are enthusiastic, have a can-do attitude and a passion for protecting our environment.
If you are interested in this opportunity and would like to know more about the work of the Waste teams in Wessex Area, please contact Claire Brown 02030259291 on or Lucy Woodland 02030250248 for an informal chat.

Interviews to be held the week commencing 3rd February 2020.
