There is an exciting opportunity to join the Fisheries team, based at Kielder Salmon Centre in the North East Area. This is a key team, working hard to create a better place by protecting and enhancing our diverse habitats and wildlife.

As the Freshwater Pearl Mussel (FWPM) Specialist in the team, you will be responsible for developing a captive breeding facility for the Tyne and Rede FWPM at the Kielder Salmon Centre.

You will deliver a programme of research into improving captive breeding techniques and reintroduction techniques for juvenile mussels that have been captive bred and monitoring their survival.

You will also be responsible for researching the reason for the species decline and designing a catchment plan that will address the mitigation measures and river restorations needed to improve the Water Framework Directive (WFD) status of the water bodies.

This role will involve close partnership working with multiple local, national and international partners, as well as with Environment Agency colleagues.
You will join an experienced and supportive team of officers who integrate fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology expertise to deliver functional, corporate and statutory duties. You will be working in a diverse part of the country primarily rural locations and some quite isolated areas.
We are seeking a Freshwater Pearl Mussel Specialist with extensive practical experience of FWPM and of working on large scale research projects, with proven ability in delivering conservation work.

You will have a degree in a biological related subject.

If you are interested in applying for this role, we strongly advise you to contact us for more detailed information about its principle accountabilities.
This role is based at the Kielder Salmon Centre, with regular visits to the Environment Agency’s office in Newcastle. It also involves travel across the country, and working in the field. Therefore a full driving licence is required.

All Environment Agency staff receive training to support our response to major incidents.
