We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment, to create a better place for people and wildlife. We look after the water environment and land quality, promoting sustainable land management and helping protect and enhance wildlife habitats. We work closely with businesses, enabling them to operate whilst complying with relevant environmental regulations.

Being a Permitting Officer is an integral role in fulfilling our vision. The National Permitting Service includes four regimes; Waste, Installations, Water Quality and Water Resources. You’ll join our Water Quality team based in Warrington. You’ll assess a variety of applications for environmental permits across the country which impact on watercourses, tidal waters and/or groundwater. You will carry out technical assessments and communicate with a variety of customers. You will issue permits in line with relevant legislation and guidance. The permitting process is well defined and training, mentoring and coaching is available. There is the opportunity for you to be in control of your own development and career path.
Environment Agency permitting teams’ primary role is to protect the environment and support economic growth through the environmental permits and licences we issue. Additional areas of work include providing advice and guidance to our internal and external customers and supporting other functions at the Environment Agency, including flooding and environmental incident response.

You will work with a team of other permitting officers doing similar work, based at the Warrington office.
You’ll ideally have some experience in a customer-focused role and be used to managing multiple pieces of work and motivated to complete it to conflicting deadlines and performance targets. You will be an organised individual who understands the importance of delivering work to a high standard. You will be interested in the environment and be keen to protect it. This may mean dealing with complex and difficult situations. Ideally you will demonstrate the following key skills;
