Are you passionate about Geomorphology and the benefits that working with natural processes can offer to river and coastal management?

This is a fantastic opportunity to work within the Environment Agency to promote and embed nature-based solutions.

We are recruiting 4 Geomorphology Technical Officers within our Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology teams to help us improve our understanding of geomorphological issues. We are looking for fluvial and coastal geomorphologists to help us protect, restore and enhance the natural environment. Each post offers an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with good technical and inter-personal skills to help us deliver the Governments 25 year plan for the environment.

You will need to be a confident communicator and have good technical geomorphology knowledge. You will provide expert technical advice and guidance to support colleagues delivering improvements to the ecological status of our rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters. You will also support the Geomorphology Technical Leader on complex jobs including on nationally significant infrastructure projects. The job brings a complex and varied case workload. This is a very practical operational role that will require regular site visits with colleagues.

You will also have the opportunity to get involved with our incident management work.
You’ll join a vibrant and dedicated team of ecologists and fisheries experts. The team provides advice and guidance to operational staff across the Area and works in partnership with others externally to help identify, design and deliver catchment restoration and mitigation activities to improve morphological and ecological conditions.

You will also be a part of a dispersed but tight-knit community of geomorphology professionals who will support you in your role and in your career development.
You will be qualified to at least degree level in a relevant technical discipline and be able to demonstrate your geomorphology expertise at interview. Relevant practical experience gained through work or education is highly valued.

We are looking for:

a team player – you will enjoy collaborative working, delivering through others, willing to support colleagues and motivated to share your own skills;

a persuasive individual – you will be able to persuade others with compelling evidence-based information, comfortable in building networks and relationships and spotting and seizing opportunities;

a confident communicator – you’ll be able to translate technical issues into pragmatic, clear and compelling advice and operational decision making;

a positive and proactive individual – you will persevere to ensure that the job gets done;

a problem solver – you will be well organised;

an understanding of the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, particularly the hydromorphology element, is essential.
