We are looking for an experienced and dynamic specialist to join the National Biodiversity section (Business and Professional Development Team) in the Environment and Business directorate. The role will focus primarily on enabling the Environment Agency to deliver its legal duties and wider ambition in relation to Biodiversity Net Gain.

You will play a key role in developing, managing and advocating for a programme of work that will effectively embed Biodiversity Net Gain as a “business as usual” approach across the organisation. You will work across the Environment Agency, government and external partners to ensure that we take an integrated approach to delivery across the business that meets a range of wider organisational targets and ensures that local teams are effectively supported.

You will be supported by a Biodiversity Net Gain Adviser who will report to you.
The post will sit within the national Biodiversity section (Environment and Business). Our section provides the national lead on biodiversity/nature themes, responsible for strategic leadership and technical advice across the organisation and externally. We work with others to improve the delivery of integrated outcomes, including biodiversity, in everything we do. We deliver an important service to help staff understand and implement statutory and policy duties and understand ecological objectives and responses to environmental pressures.
As well as the expected skills and experience required of an Advisor role (AS06) applicants should also have –
• Demonstrable relevant technical expertise and experience working in the fields of biodiversity, nature conservation and/or ecology (Essential);
• Experience of developing policy/practice in biodiversity related themes, working with a range of internal and/or external stakeholders (Essential);
• An excellent working knowledge of national and/or local biodiversity matters and applied ecological knowledge and understanding (Essential);
• Good knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain including experience of using or advising on the use of the Defra Metric (Essential)
• Experience of taking a programme management approach towards developing complex work areas (Desirable).
• Evidence of on-going learning and development/CPD on relevant policy and practice (Essential);
• Graduate and/or Post-Graduate Qualification in which biodiversity/ ecology and environmental management was a major component of study (Desirable);
• Membership of an appropriate professional organisation (Desirable).
