An exciting opportunity to deliver evidence and tools to embed a natural capital approach in the Environment Agency, helping to reverse the decline in nature and tackle the climate emergency.
As part of the Chief Scientist’s Group you will work across the organisation and with external partners to advocate for and translate natural capital evidence for operational delivery.
We are looking for a dynamic, collaborative and organised person who can help us take innovative approaches from concept through to operation use.
You will:
• Use your technical knowledge to shape and deliver evidence, tools and capability to build our understanding and ability to adopt a natural capital approach.
• Use your excellent interpersonal skills to work with colleagues across the business to identify and develop opportunities to embed natural capital thinking. This includes new policy areas such as Environmental Land Management schemes, Local Nature Recovery Strategies and Environmental Net Gain.
• Provide specialist guidance and advice to support teams trialing the use of natural capital tools, sharing learning so we can continuously improve.
• Shape and manage internal and external projects so they expand our evidence base, tools, and capability.
Based in the Chief Scientist’s Group, the Natural Capital team is friendly, collaborative and supportive. We co-ordinate and lead the Environment Agency's work on natural capital, developing and embedding evidence and tools into operational delivery. We build staff capability to confidently take a natural capital approach through engagement and training.
Many of us entered the team without explicit natural capital experience but we have a strong mentoring ethos to build each other’s knowledge and capability.
• We are looking for a team player, who can work at pace and has the curiosity to learn and respond to what our partners need from this developing and innovative approach to environmental management.
• An understanding of natural capital and its application to environmental management, or desire to develop it from a strong background in a related discipline (e.g. freshwater, terrestrial or marine ecosystems, environmental economics, water management)
• Customer and partner focused, with good advocacy, diplomacy and influencing skills
• Organised and flexible, with strong planning and project management skills
• Problem solving with experience of implementing innovative solutions and delivering outcomes
• Evidence and data management, with an interest in taking evidence through to application
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Comfortable working with uncertainty and making decisions using incomplete information
• You take an inclusive approach, valuing diversity in its broadest sense
