We are the Environment Agency. We work with government, local councils, water companies, businesses, communities to make our environment cleaner, safer, healthier for people and wildlife. Groundwater supplies most of the drinking water in Kent and South London, is vital for springs, rivers, wetlands across the area and essential for industry and agriculture.

You will be part of a busy team supporting and protecting our vulnerable groundwater resource. Delivering technical advice, regulation, and guidance on hydrogeological and land contamination matters.

Work will include:
• Interpreting technical information including geological, hydrogeological and land quality data, conceptualise your understanding in three dimensions, undertake hydrogeological risk assessments and deliver decisions to protect groundwater based on sound evidence and good practice
• Provide technical advice and support on a wide range of activities including waste management, effluent discharges to ground, pollution incidents and remediation schemes
• Build relationships and engage positively with a variety of customers both internal and external.
• Assisting The Environment Agency’s response to pollution and flooding incidents, and you will have the opportunity to train in an incident role.
The Groundwater and Contaminated Land Team regulate and protect the heavily utilised groundwater resource in the Kent and South London, whilst also implementing strategies to improve groundwater quality.

The team specialise in land contamination, landfill engineering, groundwater protection, and hydrogeology. Our technical advice is indispensable to other Environment Agency teams and external partners such as water companies and Local Authorities when making decisions regarding building and infrastructure developments, incident management, and permitting.
• Qualified to degree level or possess equivalent knowledge/experience in a relevant discipline such as geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, or land quality
• Excellent communicator with time management, data management and interpersonal skills, who can present verbal and written arguments to a wide range of audiences, with the ability to simplify technical detail.
• Proficient at producing and interpreting data to develop evidence and solve technical issues.
• Multi-dimensional conceptualisation
• Great team worker who can also work well independently
• Well-developed computer skills with the ability to use GIS, MS Office, Outlook, and MS Teams.
• Full UK Driving Licence
• Desire for professional development (We will support you to work towards Chartered status.)

Experience in site investigation data, remediation verification reports and groundwater risk assessments and/or a post graduate qualification will be advantageous
The team is based in our area office Orchard House, Addington (near West Malling in Kent) although flexible office / home working patterns are acceptable. We are currently predominately working from home, with a gradual return to the office.

Training on Environment Agency systems will be included as part of the role, and IT equipment provided.
