Flood Risk Engineer - Asset Maintenance & Management

Yorkshire and the Humber
Beverley , Leeds , York
Staff Grade 5

Engineering, Operational Delivery
Last year Yorkshire was severely affected by flooding. We’re growing our Flood and Coastal Risk Management teams so that we can reduce the risk of flooding to the people of Yorkshire. It’s an exciting time and we need your help to ensure we’re prepared.

You'll manage areas of work to ensure that flood defences in Yorkshire are fit for purpose. As well as monitoring the progress of all work, identifying gaps in the delivery of priorities and taking the necessary remedial action, you’ll be on hand to respond to issues and emergencies. You'll be a point of technical expertise for colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

The individual roles can be quite varied and will do one or more of the following:
• Delivery of capital projects
• Third party asset liaison, ensuring information relating to asset performance is utilised by others to maintain flood protection
• Management of GIS and MS Project information to deliver our maintenance programme via internal field teams and contractors
• Management of our survey programme to ensure accurate information is available
• Lead on areas of asset and data management to ensure that our GIS and related databases are up to date
Our assets are diverse: from flood and coastal defences to earth banks, walls, pumping stations, flood storage reservoirs and sluices. They require constant management, maintenance and replacement. Our Asset Performance team makes sure that all assets are inspected, surveyed, assessed, maintained and operated in a safe and effective manner to reduce flood risk for people and property. We also ensure that flood risk is managed by others, often inspecting assets and encouraging intervention if required.
You’ll understand and have significant experience in both flood risk and asset management and ideally have a relevant degree (engineering, geology or similar). First-class communication skills are a must, and you also understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration. It’s important that you’re skilled at managing multiple priorities and competing demands. You’ll be an intelligent problem solver too, with a methodical work approach. You should also have a full driving licence.
There are opportunities to get involved with incident management when flooding occurs. We have a flexible range of roles you can volunteer for and you’ll get all the training and support you need.
