Operational Delivery
‘Main rivers’ are usually larger rivers and streams. Other rivers are called ‘ordinary watercourses’. Generally, the Environment Agency carries out maintenance, improvement or construction work on main rivers to manage flood risk. The Environment Agency powers to carry out flood defence work apply to main rivers. Typically, Lead local flood authorities, district councils and internal drainage boards carry out flood risk management work on ordinary watercourses.

The role will involve leading on developing a programme of ‘demainment’ opportunities in Yorkshire. This will involve working closely with internal and external partners (likely to include Internal Drainage Boards, Local Authorities, National Farmers Union, Association of Drainage Authorities and Water Companies) to identify appropriate opportunities to change classification from ‘main river’ to ‘ordinary watercourse’. The opportunities will hopefully result in a change of classification and management, which in turn should present improved possibilities for management and future funding.
