Your role will be to undertake environmental assessment and provide advice on a range of environmental considerations and consents. It is an exciting time to join us, the Environment Agency is investing £2.5 billion between now and 2021 to reduce flood risk to 300,000 homes across England. Your role will be key to ensuring that the flood projects are delivered with attention to environmental impacts and relevant environmental consents, and to help to deliver sustainable flood schemes that achieve positive outcomes for people and wildlife alike.

Working closely with other teams, you will undertake screening, planning and coordinating the delivery of environmental assessments such as Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), ensuring that flood schemes are environmentally compliant. Working as part of integrated project teams, every flood risk project is different and you will work with a variety of environmental stakeholders, helping to identify environmental opportunities and delivering multiple benefits. There may also be opportunities to work on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the Environment Agency’s Plans and Strategies.
NEAS work in integrated project teams, managing or supporting the delivery of environmental impact assessments or strategic environmental assessments. We use the environmental assessment process to improve the sustainability of our planning and designs. NEAS officers are skilled in working with a wide range of stakeholders and bringing together a range of expert views.
You will be qualified to at least degree level (or equivalent) in an environmental, geography or related discipline.
A post graduate qualification would be beneficial but not a pre-requisite.
Relevant experience in the field of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), ideally in the water sector.
You are a good communicator and have the ability to develop effective professional relationships with internal and external partners, suppliers and environmental regulatory bodies.
Experience of project management in the environment sector, and of working within multi-disciplinary teams.
Have or working towards professional membership status (e.g. IEMA or CIWEM) would be advantageous.

You will be able to demonstrate:
• where you’ve worked with and influenced others to deliver positive socio-environmental improvements or outcomes
• experience of writing /reviewing statutory environmental statements, and co-ordination of statutory EIA
• good understanding of different technical areas of expertise, such as habitats regulations, planning, water framework directive or environmental design
This is a full time permanent post based in Leeds.

You will need to hold a full UK driving licence. The roles do require some travel and occasional overnight stays.

Environmental Awareness
Demonstrates a good understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and can confidently discuss technical matters with a range of environmental specialists. Understands how to integrate this knowledge into projects to improve outcomes.
Legislative Knowledge
Applies and interprets relevant environmental legislation and policies to individual situations. Has advanced knowledge in some specific areas, including EIA Regulations. Can advise on interaction of environmental assessment with other regulatory regimes. Able to interface with legal teams to provide advice to project teams.
Achieves Results
Demonstrates innovation in one or more schemes or provides evidence of successfully influencing a project design to exceed a challenging target.
A full clean driving licence
Have or working towards professional membership status (e.g. IEMA or CIWEM) would be advantageous.
