We are seeking a permanent Advisor to support and provide strategic and technical leadership on Producer Responsibility. The post sits within the Environment & Business Waste Regulation Group and will form part of Waste Regime Regulation team.
It is a busy and exciting time to be involved in producer responsibility as there is much political and consumer focus on activities that we help regulate. You need to be flexible in your approach and will need to be able to look outwards to influence government and industry as well as having an internal focus to support and guide our operational colleagues. The role will cover all aspects of the producer responsibility regimes for batteries, WEEE and packaging, as well as influencing and supporting Defra with the implementation of the Resources and Waste Strategy, and the expansion of producer responsibility to other waste streams. You will also provide leadership across more generic and integrated areas of waste regulation.
To be successful in the role you will need good networking and communication skills, which you can adapt, to reflect working with internal groups, government colleagues, national stakeholders, including industry groups, and the other UK environment agencies.
You will be based within a dispersed Producer Responsibility team in Regime Regulation, working alongside 2 advisors and 2 senior advisors.
A broad knowledge and experience of the waste industry are essential together with experience of influencing the creation of policy and interpreting legislation. An understanding of Producer Responsibility regulation is desirable, although training will be provided if necessary. Knowledge of or experience with the circular economy would be beneficial.
You will also:
• demonstrate an excellent awareness of the competing needs of a diverse range of ‘waste’ partners
• have experience of planning, managing and delivering tasks to challenging deadlines
• have excellent written and verbal communication skills, being able to explain complex subject matter to a varied audience
• be skilled at influencing outcomes by building and maintaining effective relationships with colleagues and partners
• need to work independently, organise your workload and demonstrate resilience around reprioritisation of workloads.
Location is flexible, but ideally located alongside other E&B colleagues. The post will require travel to meetings, most often in Sheffield, Birmingham and London. For further information or to discuss this role please contact Louisa Hatton - louisa.hatton@environment-agency.gov.uk or 02030 258252/07710 903376
Interviews will be held in central Birmingham early in September.
