The Environment Agency (EA) works to create better places for people and wildlife and support sustainable development. The EA’s High Speed 2 (HS2) Core Team are seeking an experienced officer to work on the challenging HS2 project; an exciting and unique opportunity to work with a range of partners on this high-profile and complex National Infrastructure Rail Project. The role will chiefly be to provide advice and check WFD assessments made by HS2 under the HS2 Hybrid Act. It will also involve providing advice throughout any article 4.7 derogation (regulation 19) applications, facilitate any WFD/biodiversity enhancement opportunities in the phase 1 part of the route and pick up any other WFD issues for phase 1.
You'll be part of a dispersed team whose roles are to both regulate and provide advice to HS2. The team’s role is to suggest and influence ways of working to best safeguard the environment in relation to one of the largest projects in Europe.
The team works closely with EA lead staff in Areas impacted by HS2, as well as Defra, Natural England, Forestry Commission, DfT and a wide range of key stakeholders.
Experience/skills required
• Understanding of environmental risk and making risk-based decisions.
• Good knowledge of WFD and how it works within our regulatory process (i.e. permitting).
• Manage a varied portfolio of work: deliver within tight deadlines.
• Able to create good working relationships and influence external contractors.
• Be comfortable working in a fast paced and varied working environment
• Be able come up with innovative and efficient ways of working.
• Ideally you will be educated to at least degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject.
• Some knowledge of Article 4.7 (regulation 19).
You will be based at any EA office, although some travel to Birmingham and London will be required (travel costs for external meetings and non-base locations covered through expenses).
