Flooding represents a crucial challenge both now and into the future as the impacts of climate change become apparent. Having strategic overview of all sources of flooding, the Environment Agency has a key role in shaping our response to this challenge moving forwards.

Working as a Flood and Coastal Risk Management Officer in the Partnerships and Strategic Overview Team, you will be working at the very heart of this organisation, helping to protect people and property from flooding. This role is extremely varied and draws upon a diverse range of transferrable skills. You should not expect to be working on the same task throughout the week. Working closely with your own and other teams, you can expect to be involved in any of the following:

Evaluating flood risk assessments
Technically assessing flood risk activity permit applications to determine their impact on flood risk
Providing flood risk data and information to customers.
Working to improve our flood risk mapping and spatial data

We have one permanent position and two fixed-term assignments available until 31/03/2020

The Partnerships and Strategic Overview (PSO) team have a wide and varied remit within Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM). From engaging with many other organisations to deliver FCRM projects to, commissioning computer models which help us better understand flood risk. We are a very friendly and welcoming team with a diverse set of skills and experiences to learn from all with the common goal to reduce flood risk to us all.
Through experience to date you will ideally be able to demonstrate some of the following:

• The ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers
• Delivery of work by planning, gathering and maintaining data/information
• The ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team to make decisions and achieve planned outcomes
• Good organisational skills and an ability to use MS Office
• Excellent communication skills

Desirable skills/ experience

• An understanding of the impact of flooding
• Practical knowledge of GIS software
• Degree in a relevant field such as engineering, geography or science.

The key attributes we are looking for are transferrable skills and capabilities. Do not be put off applying if you don’t have a degree and/or you don’t have experience in this sector.

A full UK driving licence is essential.
