We are looking for a Principal Environmental Project Manager to join our National Environmental Assessment and Sustainability team (NEAS). You will be a senior member of one of our operational hubs. providing technical leadership to the hub team. You will be responsible for the technical oversight of environmental risk and opportunities associated with the major project(s) including environmental governance, steer and the workstream lead for Environment and Sustainability. You will work together with colleagues and Delivery Partners to drive sustainable delivery of major projects on the capital programme and ensure we have a sustainable pipeline of work moving forwards.

We undertake environmental assessment of all the Environment Agency’s capital projects and the Strategic Environmental Assessment of relevant Strategies and Plans to ensure projects fully comply with environmental legislation and policy. We ensure opportunities to improve the environment for people and wildlife are identified and taken forward. We also provide additional guidance and advice on landscape and heritage issues. The team screen all work programmes to identify the level of environmental assessment needed to ensure that our projects are legally compliant and that all environmental risks and opportunities are highlighted.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
NEAS is divided into 6 operational Hubs, with each being led by an Operational Unit Manager overseeing 10-15 staff, supported by Principal Environmental Specialists and Team Leaders. Each Team Leader manages several Environmental Project Managers (EPMs) and Senior Environmental Project Managers (SEPMs) who work collaboratively with our environmental supply partners to provide technical expertise and support the day-to-day delivery of projects within our flood & coastal erosion risk management programme.
• Preferable to be educated to Degree standard or equivalent in an environmental science or related subject, however not essential.
• Legislative knowledge is essential to ensure the programme is environmentally compliant
• Experience of significant infrastructure projects is required
• You will need to demonstrate experience as an environmental adviser within multi-disciplinary project teams
• Excellent communication and influencing skills with both internal and external stakeholders as relationship management is a key element of the role
• Membership of a professional environmental institute would be preferred however not essential and if successful the agency can be involved with obtaining and funding membership
• It would be advantageous to have knowledge of flood and coastal risk management and FCRM Project appraisal however in house training is available
• Qualified or conversant in PRINCE2 terminology is advantageous
• Experience in mentoring and supporting colleagues is desirable

As a national role the office location is flexible. The role will require regular travel to project sites and project team meetings in other Agency and Supply Partner offices. Overnight stays will be necessary from time to time.
