The Environment Agency works to create better places for people, wildlife, and supports sustainable development.

This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in entering into a career that can make a real difference to the local environment. We’re looking for several Hydrometry and Telemetry Officers to join our team. You’ll predominantly be working outdoors installing, operating and maintaining water flow and level measuring equipment in our local rivers and groundwater monitoring boreholes. You’ll process, quality assure and archive the data that you’ve collected, helping to ensure the health of our water systems.

We’re looking for enthusiastic people who can use initiative to solve problems. You’ll play a key role in resolving issues or repairing equipment, ensuring that the Environment Agency is best prepared to respond during environmental incidents; helping to protect people and livelihoods from the impacts of flooding.

This is an entry level role, and we’ll provide you with full on the job training led by our experienced team members as well as formal training provided by external training suppliers. You will be fully comfortable in the role before being asked to complete any site visits on your own.
Our friendly Hydrometry and Telemetry teams collect data essential for the quantitative assessment of water in the environment. This information is used throughout the Agency and underpins a lot of the decisions that the Agency makes. The data we provide allows real time analysis to facilitate the issue of flood warnings or manage abstractions, as well as an archive service to inform thinking on water resource or flood risk planning.
What we’re looking for:
• A positive can-do attitude and a passion for learning and protecting the environment.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills as you will be working as part of a team and will have contact with the public.
• Confidence with using IT systems, in particular Microsoft Office programmes
• Logical and analytical approach to problem solving.
• Numerate

Due to the nature of the role the below criteria are essential:
• Full UK driving licence
• You must be able to swim as you will often be working in/near water.
• You will be required to pass colour vision tests prior to appointment as you will have to maintain electrical equipment with multi coloured wiring.
We are committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. Everyone starting in a new role in the West Midlands Area will be welcomed into the team and given all of the training and support they need to succeed.

The Environment Agency is a Category 1 Responder, responding to serious flood and pollution incidents, protecting the environment, lives, and livelihoods of the communities we serve. Everyone has a role to play, and we’ll help you to identify an incident role that fits with your skills, experience and personal circumstances.

For an informal discussion please contact jim.frodsham@environment-agency.gov.uk or paul.carroll@environment-agency.gov.uk

Interviews are likely to be held on 31 October to 02 November.
