We are the Environment Agency. As a world class regulator, we regulate the Landfilling of waste to prevent pollution and tackle the climate emergency, improving and protecting the quality of our air, land, and water. This varied role, with your team, you will lead our interface with government, the industry, and our operational teams, working with:
•government, including the Defra Waste Policy teams.
•Industry, through our Landfill Regulation Group (LRG) and major stakeholders such as the Environmental Services Association and the British Minerals Association.
•Our National Permitting Services, Local and National Operational teams.

The successful candidate will

- lead your team in understanding the regulatory context developing our approach to how we regulate the landfill sector, working with others, designing the future, and translating strategy into action plans for regulation across the Environment Agency.

- Support government in developing, reviewing, and implementing legislation and regulatory systems.

- build capacity and resilience for now and future regulatory challenges and opportunities.
- drive improvements which will benefit everyone working across the Environment Agency regulatory functions.
The work is cross cutting, working across boundaries with colleagues in the Environment Agency and beyond. We’re looking for someone who will be responsive and flexible to changing priorities with emotional intelligence, resilience, and a collaborative “can-do” attitude. The expectation is that that you will be able to flex and work across the sister teams when required.
You’ll join our Waste Regulation and Resources Team in our Environment and Business Directorate. We lead in developing our approach to how we regulate the 220 million tonnes of waste the country generates a year, designing the future and translating strategy into action for regulation across the Environment Agency.

•A track record of delivery. Demonstrating substantial experience gained in a relevant/similar regulatory environment.
•Be able to champion innovation, challenge practices and have experience in continuous improvement; With a successful track record of strategic level influencing and leading through change, with a collaborative approach.
•Demonstrate strong political acumen. Ability to develop effective relationships and with experience of successfully working across organisations.
•Be able to communicate complex issues to a range of audiences. Providing evidence of successfully taking an open, transparent, and authentic leadership approach, bringing others with you.
•Negotiate, influence and exercise excellent judgement/decision making skills, able to influence senior leaders and develop effective working relationships across the EA and with stakeholders.
•Be well-organised/focused; work can be reactive and varied so a flexible work style and pace is essential
•Demonstrate excellent people leadership skills, successfully acting as a role model, creating an open, inclusive culture where people can be themselves.
