Working in the Landfill, Deposit for Recovery and Waste Climate Change Team, you will make a vital contribution to the development of policy, procedure, and operational guidance on the regulation of landfill and deposit for recovery activities. You will join a highly experienced, skilled, and knowledgeable team who are passionate about raising regulatory standards in the Landfill and Deposit for Recovery Sector.

This is an exciting time to work in the Landfill and Deposit for Recovery Sector with opportunities and challenges emerging through the near elimination of biodegradable waste to landfill and push towards Net Zero. You will draw on your knowledge of this sector and your experience of waste regulation to contribute to the delivery of a range of high-profile priorities. These priorities include:

Tackling waste mis-description
Reviewing the regulatory options for remediation of historic waste deposits
Assessing and mitigating the risks of landfill abandonment
Improving the administration of financial provision requirements
Implementing landfill leachate BAT_AEL limits and emission standards
Supporting Defra on the near elimination of biodegradable waste to landfill
Supporting Operations on high-profile and/or poor performing landfill and deposit for recovery sites
The Landfill, Deposit for Recovery and Waste Climate Change team sets regulatory standards. We provide best practice advice and guidance on landfill gas, landfill engineering, leachate management, risk assessment, permitting, compliance, and recovery of waste on land.

We support Operations and liaise with the waste industry and government departments.

The team is dispersed throughout the country.

You will work on your own initiative while maintaining effective communication with the team and customers.
You must be a technical leader who believes that having a truly diverse, representative, and engaged workforce is fundamental to protect the environment.

You have a good knowledge of waste regulation gained through varied, practical experience. Specifically, you must have proven experience of working within the landfill and deposit for recovery sector. An understanding of the unique regulatory and technical challenges specific to the sector is essential.

You will have excellent communication and influencing skills. You will apply these skills when working with internal and external partners. You will use your knowledge and expertise to support colleagues dealing with high-profile incidents. As a leader in this sector, you will be focussed on delivering and achieving results through others. Finally, you will be comfortable in working in an agile way turning your attention to different priorities as they arise.
You may occasionally have to travel and stay overnight to attend meetings. You will not have to work from a specific office.
