We are looking for an enthusiastic team member to join our Operations Field Team.

You will help manage river defences, working to counteract the causes of flooding and pollution alongside contributing to our responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England. Delivering routine maintenance for our assets, you will help protect properties and infrastructure by maintaining flood defences and river channels.

This physical role involves working in a team, outside in all weathers, using a variety of tools and equipment to carryout tasks, such as site maintenance, tree clearance and minor construction work.

We act quickly when floods or environmental emergencies occur, providing response inside and outside of normal working hours by participating in an incident standby role as part of an emergency call out rota. This will involve operating our assets such as pumps, sluices and flood gates as well as deploying temporary barriers, mobile pumps and pollution equipment. You will be trained and supported to contribute to our response to incidents.

A requirement of this role is to complete the Environments Agency's field worker apprenticeship scheme. Enrolment is compulsory but you will be fully funded and supported throughout the 18 month programme.
Our Operations Field Team are based at our Bedford Depot.

We deliver maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses across the area and respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night. We provide advice and support to our colleagues in Asset Performance, Hydrology, Biodiversity and Environment Management.

We also work across the country when called upon to assist other areas in flood and environmental incident response.
You should demonstrate a positive adaptable approach and a ‘can do’ attitude as a worthy team player. Good organisational skills and a proven ability to work under pressure during incidents are essential. You must understand site health and safety requirements and you’ll need good communication skills to work with customers and partners.

We would like you to have a good level of environmental awareness and be proficient with tablet style computers and mobile technology.

The ideal candidate will have experience with plant and machinery and a foundation of practical skills such as power tool operation and minor construction work.

A full driving licence is essential. Trailer towing (category B+E on driving licence) would be an advantage.

Everyone starting in a new role with the Environment Agency will be welcomed and given all of the training and support needed to succeed. There are fully funded opportunities to develop further academic/professional qualifications.
You'll be given a role within the Incident Response team based at the depot in Bedford. Therefore, you will be expected to live within a 30 minute commute of this location.

Grade pay is £19,814. Working hours: 9 day fortnight averaging 37 hours per week plus regular out of hour’s standby cover.
