The Environment Agency is undertaking crucial work that forms a key part of the government’s ongoing response to COVID – 19. This is an exciting opportunity to join the management team of a new EA laboratory, carrying out vital molecular and inorganic analysis on wastewater.

Based at Exeter Science Park, this challenging role will require you to lead a large team of analytical staff to deliver analysis to clearly defined targets.

As a new work stream, you will be responsible for setting and maintaining standards in line with Environment Agency policy, guidelines and culture. You will champion the professional development of team members to ensure that we have a happy and competent workforce.

You will develop and maintain relationships across the organisation, and the wider scientific community, in order to influence our ways of working based on technical and/or scientific evidence.

You will work collaboratively with fellow team leaders and senior managers to form the site management team, ensuring that health and safety, quality management, and customer focus is at the heart of everything we do.
Based at Exeter Science Park, you will form part of the site management team.

Operating seven days a week, the laboratory will have 70 members of staff in analytical and non-analytical roles. A collaborative approach to leading staff will be required to ensure that all staff are supported. Operational hours within the lab will be from 06.00 – 22.00 each day.

The laboratory will comprise of a Sample Registration, Inorganic chemistry and Molecular teams.
We are looking for candidates with the following Experience/Skills:

- Adaptable, enthusiastic, and self-motivated, and able to work flexibly to achieve results.
- A clear eye for detail, who is adaptable, reliable and not afraid to take on a challenge.
- Experience in managing a large team, with conflicting priorities is essential, preferably within a laboratory environment and to ISO 17025.
- A history of working to defined cost, quality and operational targets
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to motivate and lead others to successful outcomes.
- A passion for science and the environment
The role is a full time (37 hours/week) fixed term (12months) contract. The 37 hours will be spread over 5 consecutive working days, with a likelihood that one working day will be either on a Saturday or Sunday.
