Within our Operations Field Services, you’ll work with and lead teams to manage river and defences, working to counteract the causes of flooding and pollution.

You’ll be the lead team member on sites, ensuring everyone works efficiently and safely delivering routine maintenance for our assets. The team work to protect properties and infrastructure by maintaining flood defences and river channels. This physical role involves working in a team, outside in all weathers. We undertake a range of activities, from strimming, debris and tree clearance to construction and maintenance.

We act quickly when floods or environmental emergencies occur, so you’ll take part in an emergency call out rota to respond, operating our assets such as pumps, sluices and flood gates.

A requirement of this role is to complete the Environments Agency's field worker apprenticeship scheme. Enrolment is compulsory but you will be fully funded and supported throughout the 18 month programme. This apprenticeship will provide you with the right competencies to be a professional asset operator, maintainer and incident responder in line with our ambition to create a better place for people and the environment.
The team is based at our Bedford depot.

We deliver a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourse across the area and we respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night. We provide advice and support to our colleagues in Asset Performance, Hydrometrics, Biodiversity and Environment Management.

We also work across the country when called upon to assist other areas in incident response and environmental incidents.
You should demonstrate a positive adaptable approach and a ‘can do’ attitude as a worthy team player.
Good organisational skills and a proven ability to work under pressure during incidents are essential.
You must understand site health and safety requirements and you’ll need good communication skills to work with customers and partners.
You will also need to coach and encourage others on site.
We would like you to have a good level of environmental awareness.
Experience with tablet style computers and familiarity with mobile technology will be useful.
The ideal candidate will have leadership experience and a foundation of practical skills.
The ability/experience to assist with team meetings and give team briefs would be beneficial to this position..

A full UK driving licence is essential.

You will be willing to undertake specialist/or further training when necessary.

New employees are welcomed into the team and given the training and support needed.
The Environment Agency take part in incident response. You will be expected to participate into the Incident Response "On Call Roster" to emergencies, out of hours. If successful your line manager will discuss arrangements with you.

As part of your comprehensive induction you'll be provided with all the equipment required.
