This is an exciting opportunity to provide technical and business leadership to our front-line teams that respond to environmental incidents, regulate permitted sites and tackle illegal waste activity across Wessex Area. We have tremendous ambitions and many pressures on our environment, so we’re looking for somebody who can combine leadership and professional judgement with a flexible and innovative approach to driving performance and delivering results.
You will work with our teams of Environment Officers, using management information, evidence and intelligence to help set work priorities, monitor performance and ensure delivery against our targets. You will support their personal development and provide technical advice and leadership.
You will work closely with our Enforcement, Installations and Legal teams, to help our officers ensure compliance at regulated sites and tackle illegal waste activity. We’ll need you to innovate to find better ways of doing things, then work with the teams to embed changes.
You’ll need to understand our customers, both those we regulate and local communities, to improve how we work with and for them. We know we can’t do everything ourselves, so the relationships you build with professional partners will be essential if we’re to realise our ambitions for the local environment.
Our EPR Waste teams respond to incidents of all kinds across Wessex Area, while regulating permitted sites within a defined geographic patch. The teams work with customers to understand issues, influence behaviour and encourage good practice. They ensure permits are fit for purpose, carry out compliance checks at regulated sites, gather intelligence and investigate illegal activity. They take action to stop or disrupt illegal activity, taking enforcement action and presenting evidence in court as necessary.
Passionate about the environment, you will have in-depth knowledge of the waste industry. Ideally you’ll have significant experience in a technical, regulatory role, but more than anything, you should have outstanding leadership qualities, and be able to remain positive and focused, even when conflicting demands conspire to knock us and you off course. You should have great communication and influencing skills, and be adaptable, able to use your initiative to take timely decisions to manage complex workloads to tight deadlines. You will demonstrate strategic thinking and a ‘can do’ attitude to help our teams protect and improve the local environment.
