We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share; please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

You will be the supportive force that empowers the National Enforcement Service- Water, Land and Biodiversity Enforcement & Investigations Team to produce robust, evidential analysis of data evidence for Major Investigations.

Your primary mission will be working on the data analysis for 10 major investigations into storm discharges from Wastewater Treatment Works across all 10 Water and Sewerage Companies discharging into English waters.

Within the framework of investigative procedure and evidence production you will have the freedom to create whatever is needed to analyse and present huge volumes of data in a simple, robust, and unchallengeable way to a Court of Law.

It’s a pivotal role to enable investigations on this scale to be carried out and you can expect to:
• Collate and format data for analysis.
• Innovate new methods to present vast quantities of data.
• Provide evidential reports on specific treatment works.
• Progress to coding new analysis techniques.
• Assist the investigation team, legal and counsel to understand the confidence attached to the data, its handling, and analysis.
• Link into the Water Industry Regulation and EDRM teams to understand whether there are data crossovers and learning between the teams.

You will work closely with the Senior Investigations Manager, the Deputy Senior Investigating Officer and the 10 Case Officers and be confident of your role and skills in this arena.

You will be required to produce any analysis in an evidential format and provide a witness statement. You must be prepared to go to court to present your analysis and evidence (training will be given).
This role sits in the Enforcement & Investigations (Water Land and Biodiversity) team (E&I(WLB)) in NES. You will currently be tasked solely with the support of Op Standard and report to the WLB-E&I Senior Investigations Manager. The role, after these 10 MI’s will expand to supporting future water company investigations both in NES and in Area.
First and foremost, you will need a good understanding of data handling/processing and presentation.

The previous water company MI handling huge volumes of water company data used manual handling through Excel. Hopefully you will agree with us that where we now have even more data (approx. 4 Billion data points) Excel is a somewhat cumbersome tool and you have ideas on automation and how to present evidence in far better (and more engaging) ways.

Notwithstanding the comment above, excellent Excel skills are a must, as you will be required to format the data, produce pivot tables and create dashboards to display a preliminary analysis highlighting the problem.

You are a proactive problem solver with exceptional communication skills and a meticulous attention to detail.
Responding to environmental incidents is a central part of what we do. You’ll be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond or provide business continuity support during incidents (which may attract additional payment). Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

This is a dispersed team based in various hubs across the country. You can be based at any EA office, however travel is required on occasion with overnight stays.

Interviews will be held face to face, approximately 4 weeks after the closing date.
