We’re looking for a lawyer with the right skills and experience to make a key contribution to the Environment Agency’s work in regulating permitted industry, notably waste, and dealing with pollution control, water quality and resources, habitats, fisheries and more. You’ll provide timely, high-quality advice and support to operational teams based in Areas. You’ll deal with civil enforcement action and may liaise with partner bodies in local and national government. You’ll handle challenges in the courts and through the statutory appeal process with colleagues and clients across the country.
The team is one of three led by experienced regulatory lawyers, which together provide essential legal support to officers in operational Areas across England. The three teams, together comprising a total of 15 lawyers, work closely with colleagues across the Environment Agency’s Legal Services whether in Area-facing or National teams, whose work includes prosecutions, flood risk and other specialisms as well as matters relating more directly to central government.
You'll be a fully qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister or legal executive). You’ll have excellent communication and drafting skills, extensive experience of advising laypersons on statutory and case-law and confidence in handling contentious matters. You’ll be customer-focussed with good organisational skills and the ability to handle your own case-load without supervision as well as being a strong team-player with lawyers and clients. Experience of environmental law and working for a regulatory body or local authority is desirable.

You will be a fully qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive with corresponding professional membership.
The role is full-time in a team based in one of our legal office hubs, with some remote working. You may be required to travel to other offices or to attend courts or appeal hearings in different locations as work demands.
