Working independently on a daily basis driving to various sites throughout Yorkshire to collect water quality, groundwater and effluent samples, recording field data using hand-held instruments. There will be a seasonal requirement to collect bathing water and ecological samples and work as part of an electro-fishing team carrying out fish surveys. The work will involve navigating to sites by vehicle and at some sites considerable walking with kit will be required. The work can be strenuous and needs to be undertaken in all weathers. Site information for new and existing sites will need to be entered on to a national database, ensuring that data held for a site is accurate and complete. Act in professional manner promoting the Environment Agency in a positive light to customers and be able to manage challenging situations with customers.
The Sampling and Collection team are dispersed at various depot locations throughout Yorkshire. In line with national monitoring programmes the team collect invertebrate, diatom, water and effluent samples along with carrying out electro-fishing surveys. The information resulting from these activities determines the quality of the aquatic environment from which the Environment Agency can plan and deliver water quality improvement plans where the need is most.
Minimum qualification - O-level in English and Maths, preferably with A level qualifications too. Water quality sampling. Electro-fishing. Borehole sampling and dipping. Invertebrate sampling using kick sampling technique. Understanding and awareness of invasive species. Map reading and use of NGRs. Self management and motivation. Lone working. Working in teams. Customer focus. Good communication with colleagues and customers. Understanding of keeping self and others safe. Recognising hazards and appropriate action to take. Data recording using office and field based systems and equipment.

The role is field based and the post-holder will be required to spend their days working outside driving from site to site throughout Yorkshire. Many of the activities will involve entering and working in water either alone or as part of a team.
