You will determine applications for environmental licences and permits to meet Environment Agency regulatory obligations.

You will determine applications so that customers can take water from surface water (mainly rivers and lakes) and ground water (via boreholes) for a variety of uses, or discharge water effluents to the environment. Or, you will determine applications from major, regulated industries and waste operators so they can operate while ensuring that the right precautions are taken to protect people and the environment. You will be expected to:

Proactively manage your own workload, seeking support and escalating issues as appropriate, to deliver high quality permitting decisions to tight deadlines.

Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues across the National Permitting Service, area teams and the wider Environment Agency to take account of differing views and make risk based decisions. You must also be prepared to have challenging conversations with internal colleagues and external customers alike, if required, and be able to clearly explain your decisions.

Carry out appropriate technical assessment in accordance with the Environment Agency's policies and procedures.

Produce appropriate records of actions and outcomes to justify and demonstrate that all legal and procedural requirements have been met.
Successful applicants will join an established team of permitting officers based in one of our centres. The teams contain people with a broad range of skills and experience, and determine a wide range of water licence and waste and installations permit applications. Although you will be part of a team with a particular regime focus (Water Quality, Water Resources, Waste or Installations), you will be expected to remain flexible to respond to changing demands.
We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals who can demonstrate:

- A broad understanding of environmental processes and issues, and preferably experience in environmental management and an understanding of the Environment Agency’s role and responsibilities.

- Excellent communication skills - being able to produce accurate, plain English correspondence, and being confident talking to customers and colleagues on the phone and face to face, to provide first-rate customer service.

- An ability to work with others.

- An ability to assess risk, and to make sound and timely decisions.

- Being comfortable using common Microsoft Office applications, and an aptitude for attention to detail.

- Ability to manage a varied portfolio of work and deliver this work within tight deadlines.

Ideally you will be qualified to degree level (or equivalent) preferably in a science or humanities subject.
