At the Environment Agency we are looking for environmental regulators with knowledge and experience of different industrial and waste processes to be responsible for the regulation of sites under the Environmental Permitting Regulations.

You will be responsible for regulating a range of activities to ensure they are carried out without polluting the environment or causing harm to people.

In particular your focus will be on the regulation, assessment and auditing of Definition of Waste Code of Practice (DoWCoP) submissions, mobile waste treatment and landfill and permanent deposits of wastes activities.

You will use your influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, often dealing with people at senior levels within industry, local communities and other interested groups. You will also respond to incidents making sure suitable preventative and protective action is implemented. At times you will set conditions under which a site may continue to operate and enforce the law should they fail to comply.
You will be based in one of our regulation Teams for Hertfordshire and North London (HNL) working out of the Welwyn Garden City Office. Our teams focus on operators in the waste sectors and industrial operations. Our priorities include achieving compliance at poor performing sites, reducing high risk fire sites and tackling waste crime. We use a range of regulatory tools, with a strong emphasis on enforcement, to achieve outcomes.
We are seeking someone preferably with industrial and/or waste experience gained through regulatory, consultancy or industry/waste roles.

• You will be able to demonstrate your practical operational experience and knowledge of environmental regulation;
• You will have experience of delivering environmental improvements using a range of tools;
• You will have a broad range of technical knowledge together with strong interpersonal and team-working skills;
• You will be proactive, self-motivated and a confident communicator, used to influencing and negotiating to deliver outcomes;
• You will be part of a team sharing skills and experience to deliver the best outcomes for the environment.

All teams have responsibilities that involve working outdoors and indoors. They also respond to environmental incidents.

Whilst a degree is not required, a science background is desirable.
