We seek an experienced Environmental Monitoring Officer able to assist with our programme of works, undertake laboratory analysis of micro-invertebrate samples to mixed taxonomic level, macrophyte surveys, RHS surveys, algal analysis and investigate pollution incidents. You’ll have a good understanding of how water quality and quantity impact on ecological communities and an ability to communicate this information clearly to a range of audiences. Data analysis and interpretation will be a key element of the work that you undertake.

The Environment Agency take part in incident response. If successful your line manager will discuss arrangements with you depending on your role and circumstances.

The Analysis & Reporting team is responsible for ensuring the delivery of environmental monitoring programmes, collecting the information we need for a variety of legislative, national and local requirements. The team is comprised of officers skilled at field-work, laboratory work, and with an expertise in assessing this multi-functional monitoring data and turning it into evidence. This evidence informs the wider business and ultimately helps underpin environmental improvements.
The successful candidate must be qualified to at least degree level (or equivalent) in an ecological technical discipline. You will have significant levels of relevant practical experience and ideally specialise in freshwater ecology. Other key skills include:
• Proven practical experience and familiarity with field-work and laboratory work.
• An ability to analyse, interpret and report ecology data.
• Ability to provide training and assistance to junior staff members.
• Capable to analyse macro-invertebrate samples to mixed taxonomic level.
• Aquatic-macrophyte surveyor
• Experience in investigating the biological impact of pollution incidents.
• Sound understanding of biotic and abiotic interactions.
• Good communication skills.
• Knowledge of and confidence in liaising with internal and external teams and partners

A full UK driving licence is essential.

Being a Member of a recognised ecological institute would be preferable.

There are also fully funded opportunities to develop further academic/professional qualifications.
