Within our Operations Field Teams, you’ll help respond to incidents and manage river defences, working to counteract the causes of flooding and pollution.

We act quickly when floods or environmental emergencies occur. In this role, you’ll be part of a 24hour emergency call out rota to respond to incidents and operate our assets such as pumps/floodgates or to clear grids and remove blockages. Note that out of hours work attracts additional compensation.

You'll also maintain flood defences to protect people, property and infrastructure. This physical role involves working in a team, outside in all weathers. You will undertake a range of activities that could include use of power tools, chainsaws, strimmers and mowers. You will also be involved in debris and tree clearance and asset maintenance using equipment and machinery on a regular basis to complete your tasks. You‘ll use safe systems of work and be responsible for the health and safety of yourself and others.

All new starters will be enrolled onto the Water Environment Worker apprenticeship, which will take around 18 months to complete. On successful completion, you will be able to register as a Technician member of Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
Our Operations Field Team is based at Rothley Depot, 56 Town Green Street, Rothley LE7 7NW. We maintain flood defences across Leicestershire and respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night. We provide advice and support to our colleagues in Asset Performance, Hydrometry, Biodiversity and Environment Management. We also work across the country when called upon to assist other areas in flood and environmental incident response.
The ideal candidate will have a foundation in practical skills like power tool operation, chainsaw and grass cutting operations. Experience using plant and machinery to deliver minor construction work would also be beneficial. However, as this is an entry-level role and an aptitude to learn will be considered.

You should demonstrate a positive adaptable approach and a ‘can do’ attitude as a worthy team player. Good organisational skills and a proven ability to work under pressure during incidents are essential. You must understand site health, safety and wellbeing requirements and you’ll need good communication skills to work with customers and partners.

We would like you to have a good level of environmental awareness and experience with tablet style computers and familiarity with mobile technology.
We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve and to promoting equality and diversity in all we do. The grade for this role is Team Member 2 and a full valid driving licence is essential. You will be required to make your own way to the depot every morning, a vehicle will be provided when on standby.

You will be expected to participate in our incident response on-call rota to respond to emergencies out-of-hours and work in inclement weather conditions.

Technical Support for our online application system is only available Monday - Friday. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
