You’ll work with our technical teams to advise the 32 councils across Kent and South London, developers, partners to ensure development happens in the right way, in the right place, with the right environmental infrastructure to protect, enhance the environment.

The South East is a complex area with high levels of growth, a huge range of environmental challenges and wonderfully diverse customers and communities. You will respond to enquiries, planning applications and local plan consultations advising on ways to reduce flood risk, improve and restore rivers, protect our groundwater from pollution and safeguard future supply, and adapt to a changing climate.

You will need to use your enthusiasm, and knowledge of the environment to:

• Develop and maintain effective partnerships with councils, developers, and consultants
• Influence planning decisions and local plan policies
• Provide developers with pre-application advice
• Manage our advice on major projects
• Work with other teams across the organisation to collate and communicate our advice
• Identify and implement improvements and efficiencies to our ways of working.
The Sustainable Places team influences development across Kent and South London using a place-based approach to influence local planning strategies, Nationally Strategic Infrastructure Projects, and planning applications.

Working closely with technical teams we evaluate environmental data, evidence and assessments associated with planning consultations and influence internal strategies across the business, developing relationship management with external stakeholders.
You will be qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and/ or have experience of working in the Town & Country Planning system in an environmental role.

You will have:

• Ability to follow agreed processes and apply them to different situations to deliver results
• Interest in environmental issues and opportunities and how they fit into the planning process
• Ability to present information from a range of sources to a non-technical audience
• Experience of customer service including written communication and acting on customer feedback
• Problem solving skills and ability to work on complex issues /opportunities and in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to deliver shared goals.
• Team working skills and experience in managing and prioritising workloads to deliver team goals and influence decision making processes
