Are you passionate about protecting the estuarine and coastal environment? Would you like to work in a team which is central to delivering outcomes for that environment?
We need a person with energy and drive to work within a team of specialists undertaking a wide-range of monitoring and assessment tasks, providing technical advice, and supporting the Environment Agency in carrying out its marine responsibilities.
The post-holder will be largely office based, assisting marine specialists and advisors with a range of internal and external demands. Tasks could range from advising area staff on practical procedures and strategies for marine monitoring activities, through to analysing and processing a range of marine health assessment parameters.
As a team member you will be involved in a range of projects and tasks, including:
• implementing improvements to how the EA collects, stores, and shares its marine biological data
• Water Environment Regulation (WFD) classification and assessment, including tool development
• Support of marine natural capital data flows and reporting indices
• impact assessment of coastal activities
• provision of evidence and data to support marine habitat restoration
• development and coordination of long-term national monitoring programmes
The role sits within the Coastal and Estuarine Assessment (CEA) Team, within National Monitoring Fish & Ecology. CEA provides a complete design, advice and assessment technical service supporting coastal and estuarine ecological outcomes. The team delivers operational, scientific and technical support to local and national teams, and to external national partners. It provides advice on marine ecological impacts and mitigation needs for marine developments and permits, including large infrastructure projects such as Nuclear New Build.
We are looking for a technical officer who is flexible and willing to work on a range of tasks. The ability to communicate and work collaboratively within a dispersed team is essential, but the ability to work independently to resolve data analysis problems is also vital. You will also be required to lead technical discussions and provide presentations to both internal and external audiences.
Ideally, we are looking for someone with the following experience and skills:
• Database management
• GIS skills
• Coastal and estuarine environmental monitoring techniques
• Statistical skills for analysing marine ecological and water quality datasets
• Report writing
• Monitoring programme management
You will understand the role of the Agency as a regulator and consultee in marine environmental management. You will be focused on delivering work to time and with a clear customer focus.
Our team promotes an inclusive culture and we welcome all applicants, especially colleagues who are disabled, LGBT+ or Black Asian and Minority Ethnic. Part time with job share applications are also encouraged. Some travel may be required to support colleagues across the business as well as to represent our interests at a national level.
