Defra’s Resources and Waste Strategy for England aims to minimise waste, promote resource efficiency and move towards a circular economy. As part of these proposed legislative reforms, the UK will see a move towards a more digitally enabled and data driven approach to waste management.

We are looking for a senior advisor who is passionate about the digital transformation of waste management to join our small team. As part of the fast-paced Waste Regulation Reform Programme you will support the timely delivery of well-designed and effective digital services across new and existing digital products.

In this role you will:

Support the delivery of digital changes across the Programme, ensuring join up from relevant projects and workstreams. This role will focus on extended producer responsibility but you may need to work flexibly between projects.

Work collaboratively with teams across the Environment Agency, Defra and elsewhere to help understand, design and coordinate the digital changes that are being delivered.

Facilitate engagement between the Environment Agency’s digital programmes and others across the Business to ensure alignment so changes to digital services meet our regulatory and enforcement needs.

The role will be based in the Waste Digital Advisory team, which sits under the Waste Regulation Reform Programme. This forms part of Waste Regulation within the Environment & Business Directorate. The WRRP includes several different projects that are being considered as part of the Government’s ongoing programme of waste and resource reforms, including a new waste tracking service and extended producer responsibility.
You will be able to demonstrate the following.

Essential:

An ability to operate in a complex and fast-moving environment, understanding linkages, inter-dependencies and risks;

Some experience of working on projects that involved the development of digital services;

An ability to work flexibly and independently, being able to initiate and manage delivery of tasks as part of a complex workload;

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain complex subjects to varied audiences;

Experience of building and maintain relationships with colleagues and partners in dispersed networks and as part of work as a team;

Skilled at persuading and influencing outcomes through understanding others’ needs and adapting your approach.

Desirable:

Broad knowledge of waste regulation and the proposed reforms
