We are seeking one Waste Regulatory (Hazardous Waste) Specialist to join our Environmental Permitting Regulation Waste teams based in Kent South London East Sussex Area (KSLES).

The post holder will:

• Operate as Hazardous Waste Technical Specialists for the whole of KSLES Regulated Industry (RI).
• Establish and embed new ways of working to optimise hazardous waste regime delivery.
• Significantly contribute to formulating our Hazardous Waste strategic plan.
• Assure delivery of the Hazardous Waste regime plan.
• Work closely with Team Leaders, Technical Leaders, the KSLES RI Business Group.
• Spend a minimum of 80% of their time on Hazardous Waste Regime delivery.
• Deliver results through others by coordinating, directing officers from Area in the delivery of the plan.
• Identify training needs, delivering training, providing technical support, coaching officers to help build our skills and resilience.
• Develop your own waste classification, assessment skills through relevant training
• Review, report outcomes and relevant metrics.
• Build, develop your networks with staff across the country delivering Hazardous Waste work.
• Lead the planning, delivery of work on classification and management of waste including: waste soils, Chapter 19 wastes, Trommel fines, Aqueous Waste, Healthcare Waste, WEEE and POPs.
You will be expected to work with all KSLES Regulated Industry teams and the Business Group.

The Regulated Industry Business Group, has responsibility for:

• Leading delivery and setting priorities.
• Delivering outcomes in a risk-based, cost effective and targeted way.
• Ensuring activity follows funding.
• Making informed decisions on ways of working and delivery methodologies.
• Maintaining oversight of the technical resilience and Learning & Development needs.
You will have a minimum of three years’ experience related to hazardous waste in a regulatory role with a track record of delivering environmental outcomes using a range of compliance and enforcement work. This should include sites that produce hazardous waste and those EPR permitted sites which store and/or treat hazardous waste. Some experience of waste sampling, assessment and characterisation is desirable.

You will be able to use your own technical and coaching skills to develop other staff and be able to communicate plans and ways of working to colleagues and peers.

Applicants should have a relevant warrant or willing to work towards one.
The role will be based in one of our EPR Waste Teams at either Addington or Abbey Wood. Interviews will likely take place the week commencing 17th October 2022 and can be conducted virtually or face to face.

The role will consist of a mix of home and office working along with a requirement to carry out some site based activity.
