Flooding represents a challenge both now and into the future as the impacts of climate change become apparent. Having a strategic overview of all sources of flooding, the Environment Agency has a key role to play in the management and reduction of flood risk.

As a Flood Risk Officer you will play a crucial role in the effective management of flood risk in the North East. This role is extremely varied and draws upon a diverse range of transferable skills. You will help develop a programme of flood risk mapping and flood warning improvement projects and support delivery. Evidence produced will be used to protect vulnerable communities through use in flood warnings, flood mapping and the development of schemes.

In this role you will deliver a programme of updating our public facing flood risk mapping and use GIS to ensure our flood risk data is accessible. The primary focus of this role is improving our understanding of flood risk from rivers and the sea, including the impacts of climate change. You will also support Local Authorities in better understanding surface water flood risk. By working collaboratively you will support the production of new data to better inform flood risk management.
Partnerships & Strategic Overview support the whole lifecycle of our flood and coastal risk management assets. We use a wide range of skills to help us plan and support our vital Flood & Coastal Risk Management work. They include analysis of data turning it into useable information to inform investment plans, engagement with communities and professional partners. We work in partnership with communities and other organisations to protect people and property from future flood risk.
Are you passionate about data? Then this is the role for you. We base all our work on evidence and this role is central in helping us understand current and future risks.

You’ll be a natural communicator, with excellent customer services skills, working with internal / external partners and members of the public. You’ll be a team player, and a person passionate about developing solutions to the problems that face our environment.

The following skills, abilities and experience are desirable:
• An ability to work under your own initiative and as part of a team.
• Excellent communication skills.
• An ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers.
• Practical knowledge of GIS software.
• Knowledge of modelling techniques
• Understanding of the impact of flooding, flood risk and incident management.
We're fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are striving to make our workforce as diverse as the communities we serve, and hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

We support flexible working hours and practices. While you will have a dedicated base location, most staff currently split their time between the office and working from home

We encourage you to keep developing your skills and professional knowledge throughout your career.
