It’s an exciting time to be involved in planning England’s water resources. This year, water companies and regional groups will consult on their draft plans for managing water resources over the next 25 years. At the Environment Agency, we are expecting significant new supply infrastructure, stretching reductions in demand and leakage, and ambitious environmental improvement in these plans. In this post you will be working to ensure the plans meet these aims. The post holder will be responsible for activities surrounding water resources management plans (WRMP), regional water resources planning and implementation of the water resources national framework.
The role involves working closely with water resources planners in Operational catchment services who work directly with water companies and regional groups. This role provides guidance to water companies and advice to Defra. The post holder will also work closely with Ofwat, RAPID, Natural England and Natural Resources Wales.
We set the direction for water resources planning. We advise government on long term resilience, future strategic water needs and the management of public water supplies. This includes scrutiny of water companies’ statutory water resources management plans and drought plans. Our objective is to ensure there are secure water supplies and a protected environment.
We are in the Environment and Business directorate, alongside other water management and investment teams.
We are looking for someone with a good technical understanding of water resources planning. We would be very interested in hearing from you if you have some or all of the following experience:
• technical experience of reviewing, producing and/or providing advice on water company drought planning, regional plans and/or water resources management plans
• wider technical experience of water resources such as licensing, environmental regulation or sustainable abstraction
• working for regulator, government, water company or consultancy on water resources
• organising and leading processes to deliver review of statutory plans or similar
• building, maintaining and maximising relationships with internal colleagues and regulators
• ability to scope, lead and deliver specific projects depending on team and government priorities
• excellent written and verbal communication skills
• an excellent track record of achieving results
