We are looking for a professional and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Senior Technical Specialist. This role is based in our Installations Team in Hertfordshire and North London. You will regulate complex process industry sites across different sectors such as Combustion, Incineration, Chemicals, Metals, Food and Drink and complex waste sites such as landfills. This role will also involve regulation of high hazard industrial sites under the COMAH regime.
You will use your influencing and negotiating skills to secure best practice, often dealing with people at senior levels within industry, local communities and other interested groups. You’ll also respond to and investigate incidents making sure suitable preventative and protective action is implemented.
Of equal importance will be your ability to develop and coach other members of the Installations teams with technical oversight of their continuous professional development and shaping the local strategy business plans. In addition, as Senior Specialist you'll be part of our Regulated Industry Leadership Group, contributing to the wider leadership of the department and our Area, particularly in the area of COMAH.
You will be part of the EPR Installations/RSR Team based in Alchemy, Welwyn Garden City. We are responsible for Process Industry and Non-Nuclear Radioactive Substance regulation across Hertfordshire and North London (HNL) and Kent and South London (KSL). The team is one of two Installations teams in HNL area. Our team influence the environment in a positive way - not just in the short term but also influencing future trends.
You will be highly motivated with a proven ability to deliver results. You will ideally have a good working knowledge of process industry and its management principles and techniques and will hold an honours degree in a science or engineering discipline. Chartered membership status with a relevant professional body is preferable.

You will have well-developed problem solving, communications and influencing skills, and good technical knowledge and experience, preferably working in or regulating high hazard industry. You will also be able to demonstrate personal and professional integrity.

Legal and regulatory training and competence development will be provided as necessary, as will opportunities for relevant continuous professional development.

Detailed technical knowledge of an industry sector such as chemicals, metals or incineration is essential. Knowledge of COMAH is desirable but not essential
The role will be based at Alchemy, Welwyn Garden City but will require occasional travel to other EA offices and local authority offices both unplanned and planned. A full UK driving licence is required.
You will be expected to undertake a formal incident management role, which may require standby or call out.
