As an Operative in our Operations Field Teams you’ll work with your colleagues, on our river and coastal defences, to prevent and respond to flooding and pollution.

You’ll be a valued team member on our sites, normally working alongside your Supervisor and fellow team members, to efficiently and safely carry out routine maintenance of our assets. This hands-on role is mostly field-based and involves working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. You'll participate in a wide range of activities, from cutting vegetation, to clearing debris and fallen trees, to repairing earth flood banks.

We act quickly when floods or environmental emergencies occur, so you’ll take part in an emergency call out rota to respond, operating our assets such as pumps, sluices and flood gates.

Although you will be contractually based at one of our depots, you will frequently go straight to your site of work within your assigned geographic patch. We therefore welcome applications from candidates who may not live near the depots but live in (or within a 30 minute drive of) the advertised geographic patches. Please refer to the candidate pack for specific locations.

We currently have vacancies across North, East and West Yorkshire.
Our Operations Field Teams are based at Riccall (near York) and Tickton (near Beverley). We carry out a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses across the area and respond to environmental incidents, such as flooding and pollution, both day and night. We provide advice and support to our colleagues in Asset Performance, Hydrometrics, Biodiversity and Environment Management. We also work across the country when other areas need assistance responding to environmental incidents.
You should show a positive, adaptable approach and a ‘can do’ attitude as a committed team player. You’ll be organised and able to keep calm when responding to incidents. It’s important you understand site health and safety requirements and you’ll need good communication skills to work with customers and partners.
You’ll have experience using, or be willing to learn to use, tablet-style computers and mobile technology.
You’ll have the energy to work with, look out for and sometimes coach others in your team. The ideal candidate will have a foundation of practical skills like plant and power tool use, minor construction work, DIY, gardening however an aptitude to learn is also welcome as full training will be provided.
The grade rate for this role is £18,676 - £20,254.
A full valid driving licence is desirable however consideration will be given to Provisional licence holders if all other criteria is met.
You’ll be expected to take part in our incident response on-call rota to respond to emergencies out-of-hours.
Technical Support for our online system is only available Monday - Friday, excluding Bank Holidays. Please note late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Relevant information about your suitability should be included in the Competency Questions section.
