This is an exciting role at the heart of the Environment Agency’s response to Chemicals Regulation.
The Environment Agency Chemicals Programme provides the framework and governance to ensure we understand and act effectively on our roles and responsibilities to protect the environment and people from chemical manufacture, use and disposal. This role is ideal for someone with excellent scientific, technical and interpersonal skills, wanting to deliver on shaping core strategic work, gaining exposure to new opportunities in a cross-cutting field.

You will provide technical leadership and project management on innovative chemicals monitoring. An initial focus will be developing and establishing new approaches on non-target screening. Evolving chemical analytical techniques for chemicals in biota and sediment and furthering chemical knowledge from research with passive samplers will also be required. You will lead on biological effects markers, including endocrine disruption and provide project support on metabonomics. You will lead on analytical approaches for micro- and nano-plastics exposure and keep a watching brief on analytical techniques for advanced materials. You will integrate our work with activities being undertaken by international groups. We are seeking to innovate in this work area, to allow chemicals monitoring to respond to chemicals challenges now and in future.
The post sits within Environment & Business in Water, Land and Biodiversity. You will be working as part of cross-cutting multifunctional team with a strategic focus in the Chemicals Programme, helping to provide a link to teams across E&B. We lead on commissioning monitoring and interpreting evidence on chemicals issues so that the Environment Agency is able to support Defra in developing chemicals policy, and inform our own regulatory response.
You will be able to demonstrate:
