The Environment Agency works across national and international boundaries.

This is an opportunity to help ensure that the Environment Agency, Defra and industry are able to fulfil their waste regulatory responsibilities after the UK exits the European Union. There is already a great team in place working hard alongside Defra to ensure that our waste regulatory priorities are carried out and will deliver the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan alongside the Resources & Waste Strategy, Environment Bill and Resource Efficiency Agenda. You may be directly involved in developing a strategy to deliver one or more of these initiatives.

As well as helping us stay on top of the developing EU Exit strategy, you will help us understand the implications of other waste regulatory initiatives, shaping them into a coherent strategy for the next 5-10 years. You will input to the Waste Regulation work plan and Regulated Industry Strategic Plan, as well as work with colleagues across the business to understand what needs to be delivered, identify evidence needs and ensure work plans are achievable.
The Waste Regulation team sits within the Environment and Business directorate and sets the strategic direction of waste regulation within England. We are currently in an exciting time where there are several new initiatives from government as well as our own aspirations around waste.

You will work with frontline colleagues, Defra and other government departments and industry to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment whilst supporting economic growth.
You’ll have a broad understanding of the waste industry with waste regulatory expertise gained either as a regulator or through working for a regulated industry. You will also have experience interpreting legislation and, ideally, influencing the creation of policy. Experience of working with multiple stakeholders is essential.

We work with local government, Defra, waste companies, trade bodies and consultants. Experience working with or for one of these is very transferrable into our organisation.

You will need to deliver results through others from across the organisation and through our partners. You will be effective at influencing and persuading, a capable communicator and have a strong customer and partner focus. You will use these skills and your understanding of business processes to shape how the organisation operates. You’ll use these skills to shape how the organisation operates and influence senior external stakeholders.
