The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising a team carrying out chemical and physical analysis of environmental samples in our Leeds laboratory.
As a technical lead within a department you will be responsible for improving existing methods and developing new ones when required. You will use your knowledge and problem solving skills to identify root causes and to rectify technical issues.
You will need to work as part of a team helping to motivate and develop staff to provide a world class service to our internal and external customers.
You will provide the delivery of specific technical and scientific activities in line with defined plans while ensuring work is consistently delivered to required standards and service levels.
You will actively promote health, safety and wellbeing matters ensuring the provision of safe working practices in line with EA guidance.
You may be required to join an incident response rota.
You'll be part of the National Laboratory Service team that provides analytical services to the Environment Agency and external customers. You will be based at the Laboratory in Leeds where there is around 35 Analytical staff and around 12 Customer Services staff. The team in Leeds carry out analysis of sediments, soils, waters and biota from England and around the coastline. The Leeds Laboratory will also be delivering the bespoke Forensic Waste Service.
Experience and knowledge of the Environment Agency's chemical and physical analysis programme is an advantage but not essential.
Experience of working in an analytical laboratory with an in depth knowledge of analytical techniques and instrumentation, preferably in the field of environmental analysis. Experience of using, troubleshooting and developing methods on GCMS and LCMS instrumentation is desirable.
You will supervise a team to deliver work within tight timescales and to strict quality criteria.
You will preferably have experience of working within a quality standard or within a UKAS accredited laboratory.
Ideally you will be educated to at least degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject.
