Do you want to work for an organisation that values difference and includes everyone?

Then the Environment Agency is the organisation for you! We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share

This is a fantastic opportunity to work as an Advisor (Nuclear Specialist) in the New and Operational Nuclear Sites team in Radioactive Substances and Installations Regulation (RSIR) in the national Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate.

At the Environment Agency, we are responsible for the protection of people and the environment. This includes the regulation of those industries across England which use and dispose of radioactive substances, both within the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors. Whether it be an operational power station, a new build project, a decommissioning site, a hospital, landfill or the national repository for radioactive waste, our work with industry seeks to ensure high levels of environmental protection are achieved.

In these roles you will provide national technical leadership, analysis and advice to our site regulators and others across the Environment Agency, to Government, and to other regulators and industry. You will help achieve a more sustainable approach to nuclear energy and radioactive waste management focussed on new nuclear build projects and existing nuclear power stations. You will also provide support to national projects, for example, the management of the response to radiological incidents is a key part of the role.

You’ll need a sound understanding of the nuclear industry, radioactive substances regulation, wider environmental protection, sustainable development and government policies and strategies. You’ll need a good understanding of the environmental challenges the UK faces and the socio-economic environment.

We promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued.
You will be part of the New and Operational (Nuclear) Sites team within RSIR. This team provides expert guidance and advice on new and existing nuclear power stations, climate change and sustainability, radiation incident management, and radiological risk/impact.

We support government with policies, strategies and legislation related to the environmental regulation of the nuclear industry and other organisations using radioactive substances.
In either your capability-based answers on your application or during interview please demonstrate your:

• understanding of government nuclear and environment related policies and priorities and a wide perspective on the regulation of the nuclear industry
• ability to build and retain strong relationships
• ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
• experience of influencing others to deliver outcomes
• experience of decision-making and problem-solving for the delivery of outcomes, taking account of both technical and reputational risks
• significant experience of working in the environmental or relevant industry sector, or having a sound understanding of environmental and sustainability challenges and issues
• knowledge regarding legislation relevant to radioactive substances regulation and other environmental issues
• IT skills
• ability to prioritise work
• written and verbal communication skills.
We’re committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve, so welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds.

Interviews will be held using MS Teams in April 2024.

We’ll hold a reserve list for 6 months. Depending on your skills/experience you may be offered an alternative post.

We’ll expect you to undertake a structured Radioactive Waste Compliance Assessor programme to demonstrate your knowledge of the nuclear industry and technical skills.

You’ll require security vetting to security check level.
