We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced fluvial geomorphologist to provide expert advice, guidance, training and technical support across the East Midlands area.
Your work will help to deliver ecologically healthier natural systems that are more resilient to pressures such as climate change, achieving objectives set by legislative instruments such as the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and policies such as the 25 Year Environment Plan.
Your role will have a strong technical and practical focus. The job involves both leading projects and participating in projects with specialist input. You will help identify, design and deliver a programme of mitigation and restoration activities in surface waters to deliver measurable environmental outcomes. Your work with operational staff will ensure that we prevent or minimise ecological impacts arising from our own activities and those of third parties that we regulate.
This is a role that is as much about working with people as it is about working with nature. You will proactively engage staff across the business, communicating with colleagues internally and externally, in order to build trusted networks and strong partnerships, so that you jointly deliver more than one person could on their own.
You will be an integral part of the Biodiversity, Geomorphology and Fisheries Team, bringing geomorphology expertise to a friendly, vibrant group of environmental professionals.
The team works strategically with other Environment Agency teams to identify and deliver environmental improvements and work on permits.
The Environment Agency has a strong and well-connected community of around 35 geomorphologists, who provide outstanding peer support to each other, as well as excellent professional development opportunities.
An experienced geomorphologist with sound theoretical understanding of geomorphology, together with good applied experience and great people skills.

• Qualified to at least degree level in a relevant technical discipline, with a very good understanding of fluvial geomorphology.
• Know how to apply your scientific knowledge to real world situations.
• Be able to analyse and interpret geomorphological information and how to use geomorphological principles to protect and to improve the environment.
• Know how to work with natural processes to achieve multiple benefits for nature and society.
• You need to be a great communicator who is willing and able to work with a diverse range of people from varied backgrounds.
• Be willing to coach / mentor others to improve their capabilities in geomorphology.

You will also identify, create and lead projects. So you will have proven project management skills and be well-organised.
Although this post is office/ home based there will be a requirement to undertake site visits and fieldwork to help answer specific questions that arise in the Area. There will be some travel to other Environment Agency office locations, attendance at National and Area meetings as necessary and chair when required. There will be occasional long days and overnight stays.
