Within our Operations Field Teams, you’ll help manage river defences, working to counteract the causes of flooding and pollution.

By maintaining flood defences you’ll protect people, property and infrastructure from flooding. This physical role involves working in a team, outside in all weathers. You'll undertake a range of activities including strimming, debris and tree clearance, construction and asset maintenance. You’ll use plant, equipment and machinery on a regular basis to complete your tasks.

We act quickly when floods or environmental emergencies occur, so you’ll take part in a 24 hour emergency call out rota to respond and operate our assets such as pumps, sluices and flood gates.

All new starters will be enrolled onto the Water Environment Worker apprenticeship, which will take around 18 months to complete. On successful completion, you will be able to register as a Technician member of Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
Our Operations Field Team is based at Gainsborough Depot, Corringham Road, Gainsborough, DN21 1QH. We maintain flood defences across the area and respond to flooding and environmental incidents both day and night. We provide advice and support to our colleagues in Asset Performance, Hydrometrics, Biodiversity and Environment Management. We also work across the country when called upon to assist other areas in flood and environmental incident response.
The ideal candidate will have experience using plant and machinery and a foundation of practical skills like power tool operation and minor construction work. However, this is an entry-level role and an aptitude to learn will be considered.

You should demonstrate a positive adaptable approach and a ‘can do’ attitude as a worthy team player. Good organisational skills and a proven ability to work under pressure are essential. You must understand site health and safety requirements and you’ll need good communication skills to work with customers and partners.

We would like you to have a good level of environmental awareness and experience with tablet style computers and familiarity with mobile technology.
We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve and to promoting equality and diversity in all we do. The grade rate for this role is Team Member 2 and a full valid driving licence is essential. You will be required to make your own way to the depot every morning, however a vehicle will be provided when you’re on standby.

You will be expected to participate in our incident response on-call rota to respond to emergencies out-of-hours.

Technical Support for our online application system is only available Monday - Friday. Please note late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
