We’re looking for an enthusiastic freshwater ecologist to help carry out and deliver our environmental monitoring and investigations programme. The role will be mainly laboratory based and focused on the sorting and identification of freshwater macro-invertebrates to mixed taxon level. The job will also involve the provision of data to customers, where the ability to analyse, interpret and report data to a wide audience, will be necessary. There will be occasional opportunities for field work, assisting other officers in conducting freshwater biological survey work.
The Analysis & Reporting team provides a vital service in collecting, analysing and interpreting freshwater biological and water quality data turning this into evidence to support and underpin much of the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities relating to national and European legislation.
We are seeking an Environmental Monitoring Officer with freshwater ecological experience. You’ll normally be qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. ecology or environmental sciences/biology) and have some experience and knowledge of:
• identification of aquatic macro-invertebrate specimens, preferably to species
• data analysis and interpretation using biological and chemical metrics
• biological survey work for freshwater macro-invertebrates and macrophytes
The role will be based in Red Kite House in Wallingford, although occasional travel to field locations and other Environment Agency offices may be required. A full UK driving licence and the ability to swim would therefore be an advantage. For further details please contact Tim Johns, Analysis & Reporting Team Leader on 07770793927, or by email: tim.johns@environment-agency.gov.uk You can also download the candidate pack for more information.
