This internship is an opportunity to apply some new state-of-the-art hydrological projections to understand the impact of climate change on water supply reservoirs across Europe. As part of the EU-funded EDgE project we are modelling the impact of climate change on two reservoirs in the UK. The generic reservoir models have much wider applicability, and as EDgE covers the whole of Europe, there is an opportunity to examine the impact of climate change on water supply across Europe in a way that has not previously been possible. The internship will contribute to the EDgE project but should also lead to at least one academic paper.

This internship is available to current BSc and Msc students, and recent BSc/MSc graduates who have graduated within the last year.
The Climate Change and Resource Efficiency research team in the Environment and Business Directorate provides expert technical and scientific advice on climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation for core Environment Agency activities. The team has leading expertise in climate impacts and adaptation and waste management. With strong links to academia and within the Defra family, we produce, use and commission research to improve the way the Environment Agency tackles the difficult challenge of climate change.
For this role, you should have an understanding of water supply, perhaps from an engineering or an environmental science perspective. You will be well organised, numerate and confident in a wide range of computational skills. In particular, you must be comfortable with running and modifying programs written in the R language. You will have knowledge in using scientific information to support decision-makers, ideally in climate change although training can be provided. You will need to be able to communicate complex information with scientists and end-users.
Closing Date: 28th June 2017 at 23:55 hours

The successful candidate will be based at Horizon House in Bristol.

For further information contact: Dr Matt Charlton, Senior Scientist Climate Change, on 07584 187531 or by email on matt.charlton@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Interviews will be held in Bristol on 4th July.

Scientific Knowledge
This post will provide you with an opportunity for you to apply scientific research knowledge and skills in a working environment. You will work in an applied research team, so the role will particularly suit a research student who would like to understand how research is translated into practice.
Environmental Awareness
The Environment Agency works to protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. Within England we’re responsible for regulating major industry and waste, treatment of contaminated land, water quality and resources, fisheries, inland river, estuary and harbour navigations, conservation and ecology and managing the risk of flooding. We are looking for a student who is passionate about these issues, and is looking for a career in environmental protection.
Applies Analytical Knowledge and Experience
This internship is a chance for you to apply the analytical skills, knowledge and experience you have gained whilst studying at university.
