Do you want to work for an organisation that values difference and includes everyone? Then the Environment Agency is the organisation for you! We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share. We are looking for an experienced Investigator to join our National Investigations Team, specialising in the Transfrontier Shipment of Waste area of our work. This work involves investigating potentially illegal shipments of waste and often leads to complex investigations involving large scale fraud. You will work with a small team to take the investigations from an initial intelligence tip off all the way through to a successful prosecution, leading the process from start to finish. We are looking for someone with an extensive investigative background who is self motivated and can bring sound knowledge and experience of all elements of a criminal investigation including working with Partners to gain intelligence, leading on the evidencing and investigation process, identifying potential lines of enquiry, delegating Actions, file building, disclosure, continuity and assisting in the development of staff. You will lead on the most complex of these cases and will act as a mentor for National Investigation Team Officers learning the process. You will oversee the searching and evidencing of shipping containers at Felixstowe port and will assist in developing investigations, interview plans and identifying potential lines of enquiry on a case by case basis. You will have strong written and verbal communication skills and experience of the benefits of good Partnership working. Transfrontier Shipment of Waste investigations often involve large scale fraud so building strong, mutually beneficial working relationships with Partnership Organisation such as HMRC, Police, Border Forces, Banks and our internal Intelligence and Financial Investigations Teams is a must.
You will be one of two Senior Environmental Crime Officers leading on our Transfrontier Shipment of Waste investigations within our National Investigations Team, part of our wider National Enforcement Service. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed team of Officers of varying enforcement and environmental experience and you will assist in both overseeing and running our waste shipment investigations and assisting in the development of junior officers skills in this area.
• Previous experience of managing complex investigations
• Experience of leading and developing staff
• Experience of allocating and monitoring investigative actions
• Experience of managing Exhibits and Statements and maintaining continuity standards
• Experience of coordinating & leading on searches and evidencing (sometimes in challenging circumstances)
• Strong interviewing skills
• Experience of working in collaboration with Partner Organisations (such as Councils, HMRC, Border Force, Police)
• Experience of using intelligence products to identify potential lines of enquiry
• Sound Disclosure knowledge
• Self motivated and leading a team by example
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
This is a hybrid working role, you will work flexibly both from home and your nearest Environment Agency office. There will be a requirement for travel for meetings and operational duties and an expectation for regular attendance at Ports, such as Felixstowe, and our Central office in Birmingham. Responding to incidents is also a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business support during an incident. This may attract additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available to support you with your incident role.
