This is an opportunity for you to contribute to protecting the quality of the vulnerable groundwater resource in Kent and South London. You’ll be part of a busy team that delivers specialist technical advice and guidance on hydro-geological and land contamination matters.

Our team deals with planning consultations, often working on high profile infrastructure and development projects, and providing advice and regulation on remediation at contaminated sites. We interpret data, produce and contribute to reports, and provide scientific and technical knowledge to support environmental permits across a wide range of areas including water discharges, oil and gas developments, landfills and waste sites. We carry out a critical role in protecting and improving groundwater quality by working closely with members of the public, developers, agriculture, water companies, planning authorities and industry.

You will be part of this work by assessing technical information for planning and permit applications such as site investigation data, soil and groundwater remediation verification reports and groundwater risk assessments, responding to customer enquiries and information requests, and working closely with customers and partners. Our team also supports our organisation’s response to pollution and flooding incidents, and you will have the opportunity to train in an incident role.
The Groundwater and Contaminated Land Team are based in Addington near West Malling, regulating and protecting the heavily utilised groundwater resource in the Kent and South London area of the South East.

You'll join a team of specialists in land contamination, landfill engineering, groundwater protection, and hydrogeology. Our technical advice is indispensable to other Environment Agency teams in making decisions regarding building and infrastructure developments, incident management, and permitting.
• You must be qualified to degree level in a relevant geoscience discipline such as geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry or land quality.
• Relevant experience and/or a post graduate qualification is essential.
• You'll be a good communicator with well-developed time management, data management and interpersonal skills who can present convincing verbal and written arguments to a wide range of audiences.
• You’ll be able to produce and effectively interpret data to develop evidence and solve complex technical issues.
• You should be able to work well as part of a team and across different departments, but also work independently by taking responsibility for a patch within Kent and South London.
• You’ll have good computer skills with the ability to make use of IT tools available including GIS and MS Office.
• We will support you to work towards Chartered status.
• Full UK Driving Licence required.
For business reasons, the role must be based in our area office Orchard House, Addington, and interviews will be held week commencing 29 July 2019.
