You'll join one of our Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) teams, providing expert analysis and advice not only to our site regulators and other colleagues across the Environment Agency but to Government, other regulators and industry.

Your work will support our delivery of radioactive substances regulation as well as helping Government and our national partners develop and deliver policies and strategies which will improve the safe and secure management of radioactive substances and enable new nuclear power generation as a form of secure, low-carbon electricity generation.

You’ll also play your part in responding to incidents both within the nuclear field and across other functions of our organisation.

You will:
• work with Operations to set and deliver priorities
• provide expert advice and support to government to help it develop and deliver effective environmental policy and regulations
• build long-term relationships with peers and influential partners
• lead or participate in national and international groups, parties or task teams as required, to provide links between policy development and implementation
• lead or support project teams undertaking work on regulation to ensure consistency across the day to day external engagement, including influencing and negotiating with external stakeholders, and leading on large projects
You will be in one of three Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) teams: Advanced Nuclear Technologies & Future Strategy; New and Operational Sites; or, the Legacy and Waste Issues team. These are small teams which interface with various colleagues and organisations around the country, including Government, helping ensure that our work delivers the best outcomes for people and the environment.
You should have a strong understanding of RSR and its application to the business sectors that we regulate, probably through having had at least 5-10 years relevant technical and/or operational experience in or associated with radioactive substances management or regulation. You will be a graduate in an appropriate discipline, ideally having professional membership of a relevant institution.

Possessing excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you must be highly motivated, be a good team player and produce high quality results often within tight deadlines. You should be able to think strategically and mindful of the political sensitivities associated with our work. You should be able to apply emotional intelligence alongside your technical capability - to help address issues, recognise opportunities for improvement and to instigate change where necessary. You should have experience of working with national partners (Government Departments, other regulators and national industry groups) and be able to speak credibly.
