This is an opportunity to help shape the future of waste regulation within the Environment Agency and through government policy and legislation.

You will act as policy lead covering many cross-cutting work areas including waste crime, separate collection and carriers, brokers and dealers. Working closely with a number of internal teams, you’ll also have a government (Defra) facing role, allowing the Environment Agency’s voice to be heard and seen as a point of expertise.

As policy lead you will inform strategy to ensure we use our waste resources efficiently and effectively, and that our way forward is understood and adopted at all levels across government. You will strive to ensure our regulatory approach is well thought out, consistent and continually looking to improve how we do things. You will be pivotal in ensuring our policies are robust and promote good practice, increase technical resilience and provide benefit to the environment and the economy.

This challenging role will provide abundant opportunities for variety, autonomy and significant impact. Your work will help maintain and enhance our regulatory capability, thus protecting and enhancing the environment, protecting people and communities and enabling legitimate waste operators to contribute to economic growth.
The Waste Regulation team sits within the Environment and Business directorate and sets the strategic direction of waste regulation within England. We are currently in an exciting time where there are several new initiatives from government as well as our own aspirations around waste.

You will work with frontline colleagues, Defra and other government departments and industry to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment whilst supporting economic growth.
You will have a broad understanding of and significant experience in environmental regulation of the waste industry either as a regulator or through working for a regulated industry.

You will be effective at influencing and persuading, be a capable communicator and have a strong customer and partner focus. Experience working with policy - writing, interpreting or influencing its creation is essential. You will have delivered results through others from across an organisation and through partners.

We work closely with Defra, local government, waste companies, trade bodies and consultants. Experience working with or for one of these is very transferrable into our organisation.
