Are you passionate about protecting and enhancing the environment? We have an exciting opportunity to join our Regulated Industry department.

The Environment Agency regulates a range of activities that affect the environment, people and the economy. You will have the opportunity to create a better place for people and wildlife through regulation and influence.

We are looking for enthusiastic and professional individuals to join the Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire Installations team. You will be responsible for the regulation of a portfolio of sites, ensuring compliance under the Environmental Permitting Regulations. The teams work covers a variety of industry sectors, ranging from Food and Drink, Chemicals, Refineries and many more.

Your work will involve;

• Ensuring permit compliance, making complex assessments of operator ability to protect the environment, prevent pollution and optimise resources.
• Conducting site inspections and responding, investigating and undertaking appropriate enforcement action to a range of environmental incidents.
• Securing compliance though virtual and physical audit programmes.
• Analysis and interpretation of environmental monitoring and performance data.

You will be expected to use influencing and negotiating skills to ensure best practice. Often dealing with people at senior levels within industry, local communities and other interested groups.
The posts will cover sites in Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.
The area provides a diverse range of environmental challenges and this is an exciting and challenging time as industries transition towards a decarbonised future, particularly with the application of low carbon technologies in pursuit of Climate Change commitments.

You will also have a key role in supporting the wider Area and Regulated Industry teams, giving technical advice and support on complex regulatory issues.
We are seeking proactive, self-motivated and confident communicators with practical operational experience and understanding of environmental regulation.
You will be able to demonstrate;

• Significant regulatory and industrial experience across a range of industries.
• Excellent influencing skills and success in developing good relations in complex environments.
• Experience in delivering environmental improvements using a range of tools.
• Ability to manage multiple demands on time in a prioritised manner to achieve outcomes and deliver against plans.
• A proven track record of taking initiative and using a continuous improvement approach.
• You will hold an honours degree (or equivalent), ideally in a science or engineering discipline.
• Chartered status or working towards chartered status with a relevant professional institution is desirable. The Environment Agency supports professional development to achieve and maintain chartered status.
You’ll do vital, purposeful work that influences and protects lives, places and communities.

The Environment Agency is a category 1 responder, and you'll be expected to participate in the standby rota which may include out of hours working.

We are committed to making our organisation as diverse as the environment and represents the communities we serve. Our society and environment are changing, bringing us new challenges all the time.
Above all, it’s your environment, so we want you to play a role in its protection. This is your opportunity to make a real difference, not only in the landscape but also to people’s lives
