We work to ensure homes and business are better protected and communities are better prepared for floods. You will support our flood incident management and warning services in the busy Hertfordshire and North London area. Working within the Flood Resilience team, and with a range of internal and external partners, you will support the public, professional partners and the Environment Agency staff to be prepared for and resilient to floods. As part of a varied and challenging workload you will:
- ensure we provide a first class response to flood incidents by maintaining our systems and procedures and contribute to the delivery of training and exercising of our incident staff;
- support the team to plan and deliver engagement with local communities, to increase awareness of flood risk and knowledge of appropriate actions to take in response to flooding;
- work with professional partners to support multi-agency planning and preparation for flood incidents;
- contribute to our wider incident response in line with your skills and experience.
Our Flood Resilience Team ensures we are resilient and ready for incidents by:
- maintaining our flood warning systems;
- working with communities at risk from flooding, providing advice on what to do before, during and after flooding;
- training and supporting our incident staff;
- working with our professional partners to ensure we all pull together for the best response.
You will:
- have an understanding of flood risk and incident management and demonstrate an awareness of the Environment Agency’s role in managing and responding to incidents;
- demonstrate excellent communication skills, able to use a range of styles to address different audiences, with experience of community engagement being desirable;
- be well organised, able to prioritise a varied workload and maintain attention to detail to ensure your work is delivered to a high standard;
- be self-motivated working well in team environment and under your own initiative;
- have competent IT and data skills; experience of GIS software would be beneficial.
We are recruiting to one permanent post and two temporary, 18 month vacancies.

Travel to external meetings and other Environment Agency locations may be required. You should also be prepared to attend occasional community engagement events that may be held on evenings or at weekends. A full UK driving licence is not essential, but would be beneficial.

The Environment Agency is a Category 1 responder. You will be expected to participate in our response to incidents which may require out of hours working. There are a wide variety of incident roles to match your skills, experience and personal circumstances. Full training and support will be provided.
